Attention musical curmudgeons, now might be a good time to book into that silent retreat you've always told yourself you will one day visit.

As you read this, K-Pop superstar Psy's follow-up to Gangnam Style is being downloaded across the globe and, via social media, television, radio and thousands of too-loud headphone sets on the train, the track Gentleman will reach into every cultural corner in a matter of days.

The King of K-Pop himself will perform it live for the first time in Seoul tomorrow, which will be live-streamed around the world on YouTube.

Psy-cology ... No doubt what kids will be singing. Oh joy.

Whether Gentleman does the same exponentially tighter circuits of our collective subconscious for the next year the way that Gangnam Style did remains to be seen. That probably depends on the video, which is also expected to be released this weekend. After all, the song was synonymous with the "horsey dance" in that joyously awkward video, which became the first clip to surpass one billion YouTube views.

In a promo clip announcing the new song, Psy performs what some have suggested could be his new dance style. Here at Fairfax HQ, descriptions of the dance ranged from kicking a soccer ball while waving one's arms, to a cartoon version of the hokey cokey while throwing an imaginary boulder, to cradling an invisible baby while trying to shut the door with one's foot.

So whether Psy's latest is merely a No. 1, or a global phenomenon, is only half about the music. But what's Gentleman actually like as a song? To subject it to the laser focus of our esteemed album reviewers would be like asking the snooty judges at Britain's Supreme Cat Show to lift the tail of the Keyboard Cat. It couldn't possibly end well. On top of that, our musical yogis would be rendered unable to review anything for a month, because yes,Gentleman is incredibly catchy. In fact it's three minutes 14 seconds of insanely sweet ear candy, even if early listens fell short of Gangnam Style.

Psy has avoided obviously ripping off Gangnam Style – think how easy it would have been to release something like Gangnam Restyled? But he has followed a winning formula: quirky cross-cultural rapping over classic dance beats, with a central unforgettable key lyric.

Gentleman begins with a retro handclap with a classic four-on-the-floor club beat, layered over with Psy's unmistakable Korean/English rapping.

Fans of old-school slow-tempo house beats will love it, but others may think it doesn't start as strongly as Gangnam Style – which could be telling for a buying audience with goldfish attention spans. But around the 45-second mark Psy drops one of his trademark English-language catchphrases destined to be repeated by smart-alec tweens the world over, "Damn girl! You so freaky sexy!".

The pace picks up and a minute in, he hits us with the phrase that you won't be able to escape for months, even if Gentleman is only a moderate hit: "I'm a Mother-Father-Gentleman".

The web was awash this morning with people sniggering that the first part of that sounds a lot like a similar but more obscene phrase, but it's no mistake. "Mother-Father" is a way of saying that without saying it.

Psy has basically made the key lyrics of his new hit a censor-friendly and fun obscenity. Expect armies of eight-year-olds to drive their long-suffering parents and teachers bonkers by announcing they are a "Mother-Father Gentleman". Oh joy.
